About Us
Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together.
Abundant Life Christian Church has been ministering for 36 years. “Also I heard the voice of the Lord Saying, whom shall I send, and who shall go for us? Then I said, here am I send me.” Isaiah 6:8
The vision of Abundant Life Christian Church was shared at Julie’s Restaurant in Los Angeles, CA during the first organizational meeting with nine dedicated persons in attendance on September 9, 1983. They were: Jo Ann Robinson, William Bynum, George Jacobs, Ruth Huges, Mary Nix, Judith Richardson, Karen Dickerson, and Elvira Vinson. The group joined in prayer and commitment to the vision that god had given to Rev. John E. Tunstall, IV to organize a new church.
The name of the new church would be Abundant Life Christian Church, derived from the scriptural passage of John 10:10: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.”
The logo would consist of the dove, representing the Holy Spirit with an outpouring of overflowing of rivers of living waters.
A series of temporary meeting locations were used for worship services, bible studies, and prayer meetings: Pastor Tunstall’s garage, the Action Headware (hat factory), house to house (koinonia) fellowship, Crenshaw High School, and the Imperial Theater. But on November 19, 1984, by the unmistakable intervention of Almighty God, we became the new owners of our present church home located at 3500 South Normandie Ave.
Thereafter, the vision for ministry evolved into the form of a baseball diamond with first base designated as “Bring Them In;” second base as “Disciple Them Up;” third base as “Send Them Out;” and home plate as reaching our heavenly home. Now in our 33rd year, that vision has been manifested through many expressions of ministry:
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ)
As members of the Christian Church, we confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and proclaim Him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ’s name and by his Grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people. We rejoice in God, Make of heaven and earth and in the covenant of love, which binds us to God and one another.
Through baptism into Christ, we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God. In the communion of the Holy Spirit, we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ.
At the table of the Lord, we celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ. Within the universal Church, we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture. In the bonds of Christian faith, we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose Kingdom has no end.
Blessings, Glory, and Honor to God, Forever.
Amen
